"L’arrossejat", the most seafaring flavor of l’Ametlla de Mar

There are dishes that are not only tasted… they are lived. "L’arrossejat" is one of them. An authentic fishermen’s recipe from l’Ametlla de Mar, later spread to other parts of the Catalan and Valencian coast, this dish carries the seafaring identity of l’Ametlla de Mar engraved in its essence, explaining better than any book who we are and where we come from.

Decades ago, when fishermen took a break between catches, they cooked simple yet essential dishes right on the boat: fish broth, "fideus rossejats"… and, of course, the unmistakable "arrossejat". With freshly caught fish and a little rice, they turned simplicity into a true feast. First came the boiled fish with a potato, served with allioli; then, from that flavorful broth, was born the "arrossejat" that still moves us today.

In l’Ametlla, "arrossejat" is not just a festive dish: it is a weekly tradition, an inheritance from our grandparents and parents, childhood memories after school, and the scent of the sea filling every home. That is why, every autumn, we dedicate a special tribute to it: the Jornades del Peix de Llotja i de "l’Arrossejat" (Fresh Fish and Arrossejat Festival), which this year takes place from October 3 to 12. Fourteen restaurants in the town invite us to discover seafaring menus with "arrossejat" as the star, offering gastronomic proposals ranging between €30 and €65. A unique opportunity to taste the best of our cuisine with the seal of the Mediterranean.

The highlight comes on October 12, with the 39th "Diada de l’Arrossejat" in the port of l’Ametlla, the longest-standing gastronomic festival in the Terres de l’Ebre. Around fifty amateur cooks will compete to prepare the tastiest "arrossejat", while visitors will be able to enjoy this seafaring dish, along with other tastings prepared by the Fishermen’s Guild of l’Ametlla de Mar and Peix Blau CatSud Tarragona, paired with wines from the DO Terra Alta. All this in a festive atmosphere with the performance of the Colla Castellera Los Xics Caleros, the lively music of the local brass band Suquet Calero, and a session with Dj106.
